CDC Moratorium on eviction

ATTENTION!!

federal eviction moratorium issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) takes effect today, September 4, extending vital protections to tens of millions of renters at risk of eviction for nonpayment of rent during the global pandemic.  This is an effort to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and to help stabilize our communities.

Under this declaration, it is illegal for landlords to evict tenants, lessees, or residents of residential properties. In other words, if you are a renter and have been threatened by eviction, you can temporarily suspend the process.

Am I eligible?

Here are the eligibility requirements:

  • Earn no more than $99,000 in annual income for Calendar Year 2020 (or no more than $198,000 if filing a joint tax return), was not required to report any income in 2019 to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, or received an Economic Impact Payment (stimulus check) pursuant to Section 2201 of the CARES Act;

  • Provide proof of lost of income due to COVID

  • Declare that you have sought after government assistance to prevent eviction.

  • Declare that eviction will cause homelessness

What do you need to do?:

Each adult listed on your lease must fill out the declaration form attached to this email. The completed form(s) must then be taken to the property owner or the person who has the right to evict you (like a landlord).

Unless otherwise state, the CDC has ordered that no renter be evicted/removed from where they are living through December 31, 2020. PLEASE NOTE: You are still required to pay rent and to abide by the rules of the place where you are living.

If, after submitting the signed declaration form your landlord continues with the eviction, you should seek legal assistance. Know your rights.
